Common questions about Invisalign

How often do I see an orthodontist while wearing Invisalign?

You’ll visit Datwyler Orthodontics about once every 8-12 weeks to make sure your Invisalign treatment is progressing as planned. Check out our office to see what it’s like

How often do I wear my aligners?

You must wear your aligners for up to 22 hours daily. You may remove them for eating, drinking and regular oral hygiene.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Dr. Datwyler will determine the exact length of your treatment plan based on your specific needs. On average, Invisalign treatment takes between 6-18 months, but many patients start to see results in just a few weeks. Invisalign technology can help you get the smile you want faster than traditional braces.

Will wearing the aligners affect my speech?

Like any orthodontic treatment, there is a short adjustment period. The more you speak with the aligners on, the quicker you will adjust. Hear from our patients how their treatment went

Is there any discomfort with Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign treatment straightens your teeth by applying a gentle, constant force. So it’s normal to feel a little pressure the first few days of wearing a new set of aligners. This is a sign that your teeth are moving sequentially into their final position. Learn more about Invisalign on our treatment page

Are there any food restrictions while in treatment?

Nope! Invisalign clear aligners are totally removable, so there are no food restrictions at all. With traditional braces, there’s a long list of foods you can’t enjoy because they could get stuck in the wires or brackets — or even damage your braces. With Invisalign, you can just pop out your aligners during meals and eat whatever you want.

Can I smoke while wearing Invisalign?

We discourage smoking while wearing clear aligners because the cigarette smoke tends to discolor them.

Can I chew gum with Invisalign?

We recommend that you remove your clear aligners prior to chewing gum, as the gum will stick to the aligners.

How do I keep my aligners clean?

Brushing your clear aligners with toothpaste will keep them fresh and clean.

Common orthodontic questions

What if I need to reschedule an appointment?

We understand that, once in a while, unforeseen circumstances arise which necessitate changing a scheduled appointment or cause you to overlook an appointment. We will do our best to reschedule your appointment as soon as possible. However, to avoid a delay in treatment, it may be necessary to reschedule during school hours. Missed appointments or numerous appointment changes will inevitably result in an extension of your treatment time. Contact us right away if you need to reschedule

Do you accept my insurance?

Yes. We accept any dental insurance and are happy to submit a claim on your behalf. Check out our blog on how to pay for braces to learn more!

How do you brush and floss with braces?

When you get your braces on or Invisalign fitted, Dr. Datwyler or the orthodontic assistants will walk you through how to brush and floss with braces properly.

Can you drink soda with braces?

You can drink soda with braces, but it is recommended only in moderation. Soda can stain your teeth and contains sugar. You should brush your teeth after drinking soda.

What age do kids get braces?

It is recommended for children to see an orthodontist by age 7. Dr. Datwyler offers free, complimentary orthodontic consults!

Will I need retainers after my treatment is complete?

All orthodontic patients are instructed to wear their retainers at night indefinitely. Sleeping with your retainers in at night will ensure a healthy bite and maintain the new position of your teeth.
